If you have bacteria build-up, notice a funky smell with your unit, or if the unit has been stagnant for a long time, you may want to sanitize your softener. It should also be done initially when installing your softener and then as needed in the future. Follow the steps below to properly sanitize your softener.
**NOTE: If you are using a rust-control salt, for optimal performance, we recommend you remove that salt and re-bed with regular salt before sanitizing the softener.
Locate Your Serial Number
Find the Serial Number printed on the inside rim of the tank, under the salt lid hinges.

Let's Sanitize Your Softener
1. You'll need to find the Brinewell inside your salt tank. It's the 4-inch diameter dark tube. It will look like either picture below.
2. Go ahead and pour three (3) ounces of unscented household bleach down the Brinewell.
3. Now, hold the ‘Recharge’ button until you hear the motor start, then let go. This will start a recharge cycle. Note that any water used in the home during a recharge cycle will not pass through the softener - it will come straight from the water source.
4. After the recharge is complete (about 2 ½ hours), run a cold-water faucet downstream of the softener for 20 minutes to clear any left over bleach from the water lines.
If you were sanitizing to get rid of bacteria build up, stagnant water or a funky smell and you still notice it's there, we recommend you perform this again tomorrow or the next day.
