Do you suspect your softener may be recharging too often? Sometimes, a leak or incorrect programming can cause the softener to recharge more often than needed. This can lead to higher salt use and a higher water bill, which isn't ideal. Let's review a couple things below.
Click each step below to expand directions.
Step 1- Review Your Hardness Programming
It's important that the hardness number programmed into your unit is set match the hardness/iron content in your incoming water. The higher your water hardness, the more frequently your softener is going to recharge. It's essential to ensure your number is set correctly. Head on over to take a look at our Hardness Level Programming article to determine your appropriate value.
Step 2 - Review the Water Usage
Next, we're going to check the water flow. We can use this feature as a tool to make sure water isn't running somewhere in your home that you're unaware of.
1. Go ahead and turn off all the water in your home (faucets, sprinklers, laundry, dishwasher).
2. Now, at your unit, hold the Select button down until ‘000’ appears on the screen, then let go. This is the water flow screen.
3. At this point, if you see the numbers are counting, water is flowing somewhere in your home.
4. You're going to want to monitor this over several days. If you notice the numbers counting up each time you check this, but you've turned off all water then there's water running somewhere you may not be aware of. You may want to check the toilet, hoses, outdoor faucets or sprinklers that may be softened as well.
Step 3 - Check Your Optional Programming (select models only)
Your unit might have a customizing option to set ‘Max Days between Recharges.’ If this is accidently set to 1 or 2 days, your system will be recharging more frequently than necessary and using a lot of salt. Let's check this:
1. Hold down the Select button until ‘000’ appears, then let go.
2. Now, press the Select button multiple times to see if you have a screen that displays ‘Recharge’ and ‘Day’:
3. You should see ‘- - - -‘ or AUTO on the screen, meaning the system is running automatically.
If there's a number on the screen here, it means the system is still running automatically, but it will recharge every X amount of days. To reset this so it won't recharge every X amount of days, you’ll want to push the Down arrow until you see the screen above. Then press the Select button twice to return to the home screen.
