You might have noticed that your softener's resin tank isn't completely full. How much resin should be in the tank?
Your softener's resin tank should typically be around two-thirds to three-quarters full of resin. The remaining empty space at the top of the tank is known as freeboard. It allows room for the resin to move around during backwash so dirt and rust particles can be properly rinsed out.
If you're re-bedding your water softener with new resin, check the specifications table in your owner's manual for the amount of resin your model uses. Then head over to our article Replacing Resin Beads for instructions.
